The one and the only note that sounds supreme in the Vedantic philosophy is spiritual heroism

The one and the only note that sounds supreme in the Vedantic philosophy is spiritual heroism. It has been heard at the very dawn of this world. It is the true natural inheritance of every individual. It has been and is the trumpet of freedom, awakening every one of us from the long and deep slumber of the world and bidding us all to come face to face with the practical truth beyond everyday phenomenal life. It is truly a bugle call for all of us to look into nature. We must dive deep with keen and discriminating insight into the material things that influence our actions, private or public, and on which rests our environs. We cannot be blind to the fact that the more we are body bound, dependent on physical existence alone, the further we are from spiritual heroism.

No doubt, we are to be strong physically, but still more we are to be strong mentally and spiritually. The strength of the body depends on that of the mind, whose strength, in turn, depends on that of the Spirit (Atman) within. Therefore we must be undoubtedly alive with the spirit first, in order that we may really be sound in mind and body. It does not avail us in the least, to be dancing all our life, in the physical dirt and tossed about, here and there, in the wrangling of the intellect. Spiritual heroism is ridding ourselves of the slavery of flesh and blood and of the bondage of petty desires and of the demands of the little self and then rising above this jelly fish existence, in both matter and mind. It rings right, to the ear, that though one is apparently encircled by material gloom, one need not be of it. This maxim is the beacon light, as it were, in the filed of life, illumining the dead darkness of the mundane. It is the only strength. This Divine Truth, on which we can stand steady and steadfast, is realizing the central unity everywhere with no room for conflict or confusion at all.

… Spiritual heroism on the contrary, unfolds life to its fullest. In other words, it reveals the whole truth of the cosmic energy and of life. To be a hero spiritually, it is not required of us to make an outward exhibition of any kind because spiritual heroism is experienced by unostentatiously bringing it in to an effective operation within life. It is a matter of one’s own sincere endeavour and progress made silently, yet solidly, towards the Spirit (Self). It speaks in the language of the heart and of the true nature of everyone….

Once there was a great sage who was seated naked on a rock in a jungle. He had drunk deep the the waters of wisdom and roamed about homeless in the intoxication of divine ecstasy. A king who has marching on his homeward way….
Hence, the sage burst forth thus:
“What! You seek to make me afraid? Death is a joke to me. To me, no weapon can pierce, as no air can dry, no water can wet and no fire can burn. I am the Impersonal Being of the whole world, the Infinite, the Eternal, the Birthless, the Deathless, without beginning and without end. The same art thou and thou art also that!”
